The Aggies and Mustangs had easy wins this week, but the top stays in College Station where A&M still living off that win over Alabama and wondering what if. This week’s rankings:
1. Texas A&M (6-2) | Last week: 1
The Aggies aren’t messing around. After a romp at Mizzou they came home and did the same to South Carolina. (Is it wrong to still wonder about what if the Aggies had played like this in the losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State before beating then No. 1 Alabama?)
2. SMU (7-0) | Last week: 2
The Mustangs enjoyed a prime-time win over Tulane on Thursday and more time to get ready for a trip to Houston. Haven’t seen any SMU billboards around town yet (maybe they’re still adding some in Fort Worth) but the Mustangs had a full-page ad in Sunday’s Chronicle, on newsstands now.
3. UTSA (8-0) | Last week: 3
UTSA is moving to the AAC. Too bad they aren’t there already. They might get more respect for their unbeaten start and a school-record eight wins in a row. After taking care of Louisana Tech, the Roadrunners are off for a week.
4. Baylor (6-1) | Last week: 4
The Bears were off and hopeful that LSU wasn’t calling Dave Aranda about its upcoming vacancy.
5. Houston (6-1) | Last week: 5
Those watching on ESPN News after a five-hour weather delay, and able to read lips got a taste of Dana After Dark as the announcers said. Luckily for the Cougars, they ended it quickly in overtime against East Carolina with a touchdown on their first play and then forcing a turnover. Bring on the Mustangs.
6. Texas (4-3) | Last week: 6
The Longhorns had a strong start to their bye week but faded near the end. They are at Baylor this week in the first of consecutive road games (Iowa State follows) that will say a lot about Steve Sarkisian’s first season.
7. UTEP (6-1) | Last week: 7
The Miners had an open date to enjoy their bowl eligibility. They will host UTSA in two weeks at the Sun Bowl in a C-USA showdown but first they are at Florida Atlantic.
8. Rice (3-4) | Last week: 10
The Owls played like they belonged in their new conference, the AAC. They stunned defending C-USA champion UAB, on the road.
9. TCU (3-4) | Last week: 8
Zach Evans was back and carried 18 times. But he only gained 62 yards, averaging just 3.4 yards per carry, less than half of his average, in a loss at home to West Virginia.
10. Texas Tech (5-3) | Last week: 9
The Red Raiders led by 14 points three different times while trying before falling to Kansas State. They have yet to win consecutive Big 12 games under coach Matt Wells.
11. Texas State (2-5) | Last week: 11
The Bobcats could only manage a field goal in the second half in a loss at Georgia State.
12. North Texas (1-6) | Last week: 12
The times are tough in Denton. The Mean Green lost a 12-point lead in the third quarter to drop a non-conference game to Liberty. North Texas is at Rice this week.
